The Rocket
The Pocket Rocket
Jolly Roger
Doc
The Mannassa Mauler
Dave The Rave
"Big Game" Hunter
Catfish
Clyde

And so it goes.

Re: great sports nicknames
I agree about initials. So MJ is not a nickname for His Airness.
Shame on me. How could I leave out Cooz? Also called "Mr. Basketball".

Re: great sports nicknames
It must have been in junior high when I read Cousy's biography. NY kid, Holy Cross, then a Knicks killer.
On Sundays, there was one televised NBA game, I hated when that former junior high school coach from Brooklyn named Auerbach lit that victory cigar. What a team!

Re: great sports nicknames
I think you got them all except I didn't see Big Cat or Big Country.
Our HS football coach called my brother Pork Chop and me, for reasons unknown to this day, Raymond but I guess we're only doing pros here.

Speaking of The Cooz and Holy Cross, Tommy Heinsohn, a New Jersey boy, also went there. The Crusaders defeated Oklahoma in the finals at MSG to win the NCAA championship in '47.

Is this a trick question?
No just followed by a stupid question.
Actually, it's "how are THESE "classic" pics?
not How are these "classic" pics?
There was a magazine back in the day called SPORT. Unlike SI, it really didn't give you recent scores as it was a monthly magazine mostly feature stories and a few columns. (Cosell I remeber had a column there).
Anyway, speaking of '56 All-America team, I remeber they had on their cover ... Wilt
dunking and the pic was at rim level seemingly behind the backboard it was taken. I still remember the first team for the following year ('57) ....
Wilt Chamberlain Kansas
Guy Rodgers Temple
Temple Tucker Rice
Lenny Rosenthal North Carolina
Sorry.....the fifth name escapes me. Some reason Syracuse enters my mind. Vince ??
