Farrior, 37, was set to make $2.8 million in 2012, the final year of a five-year deal he signed in 2008. He played five years with the Jets, and had been a Steeler since 2002. The two-time All Pro was a member of the Super Bowl XL and XLIII championship teams.
The club has until Monday afternoon to use its franchise tag and has spent the week clearing salary cap space.

Farrior's agent, Ralph Cindrich, unhappily tweeted the news Friday: "James Farrior has been a rock for the Steelers but the Turk takes no prisoners - he's gone."Farrior, 37, was set to make $2.8 million in 2012, the final year of a five-year deal he signed in 2008.
