Football fans outside of Marshfield area report victimization through Packers ticket scam

MARSHFIELD, Wis. — Wisconsin residents outside of the Marshfield area are reporting they were victims of a Green Bay Packers ticket scam through which police say a 37-year-old Marshfield man stole tens of thousands of dollars.

Lt. Darren Larson of the Marshfield Police Department's detective bureau told the News-Herald Media (http://mnhne.ws/1pqjCqg) that football fans from outside the department's jurisdiction are coming forward. The Marshfield man, whose name hasn't been released by police, previously admitted to scamming local fans seeking Packers tickets.

Larson said his department is waiting to submit the matter to the district attorney's office until it determines a more definite number of victims.

"We want a strong sense of the number of victims before we submit it for review," he said. "You only have one chance, and you want it to be thorough and accurate."

The bureau estimated last week that there were about 20 victims who lost a total of $50,000, but the number could be higher, according to Larson.

"There's a lot of complexity here," he said. "We're on two weeks of this investigation and we're still finding more (victims)."

The investigation began after a 58-year-old man from Marshfield told police he hadn't received tickets he paid more than $6,200 for. Detectives determined the scam began about a month and seemed to target local businesses, according to Larson. The suspect told victims he had connections to the Packers organization through a previous job, Larson said.

"Whatever he told people, there was just enough of a factual basis to make someone believe it," he said. "Again it's one of those cases where if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

These fans, a.k.a "owners", should be use to paying for a worthless piece of paper. LOL

No one famous got beat up either...........no players got caught taking illegal performance enhancing materials.    And by golly, the federal government is still in business until at least the Monday Nighter versus the Falcons.
