Was it pretty?  Nope, but a win's a win.

With six games in a row coming up against some of the top QB's in the league, I can't feel good about this win. Smith was horrible despite whatever numbers he put up. This guy just isn't smart. So many bone head plays. The rushing game was good, but the only thing that can be said positively about the offense was that they were able to stay on the field long enough to give the defense (the real reason the Jets won) a rest.

The consensus from the bloggers is that while Geno was not spectacular, he  showed more poise than last season.  If Vick is inserted, there'll be all hell to pay, and Geno is the future, not Vick.
It seems to get a real franchise QB from college, you'd have to go 1-15 to get the #1 pick, and many teams don't want the pressure of that pick.

I agree, that you can't start Vick now that the decision has been made to go with Geno. However, he may have poise, but poise alone won't win games. I think I saw just as much poise from their rookie QB Carr and he lost. Smith continues to make the same mistakes he made last year. He doesn't know how to slide instead of taking a hit when he runs. That cost the Jets at least one TD. He doesn't know when he cannot afford to take a sack. That cost the Jets at least a FG. These are two plays (10 points) that have nothing to do with poise or athleticism and everything to do with playing smart. Jets can't afford to leave points on the field especially against the teams coming up.

Don't agree that a franchise QB has to be drafted high in Rd 1. Russell Wilson, 3rd round, Colin Kaepernick, 2nd round, Andy Dalton, 2nd round, Nick Foles, 3rd round.

Of course there are the few exceptions.  At least you didn't measure the template for later picks, one Tom Brady.

By and large, the Lucks, and RG IIIs are chosen early.

And not all the early ones make it. See M. Sanchez, B. Gabbert, J. Russell, B. Quinn among others.

Despite my negative comments on the Jets win, there were some positives that should be pointed out in all fairness.

1) The defense played great as advertised, particulary both corners. Allen was good and it was refreshing to see a CB tackle with authority. Walls also good, hard to fault him on TD catch, great play by the receiver.

2) Running game was very good, even without the long TD run.

3) Pass blocking was pretty good. Geno had time to throw on a good number of passing plays.

4) Geno moved very well in the pocket to escape pass rush and give himself a few extra seconds, nice to see that.

5) Jets defended very well on third down.

6) Special teams. Very good, except for that 40 yard return. Especially liked how the Jets handled the on-side kick. Perfect! They were obviously well coached. Need better consistency in punting.

7) Offense. Despite all the penalties and mistakes, the offense was able to mount drives and give the defense a breather. Only one turnover resulted in points against, a far cry from last year when the offense consistently gave the ball away, or went 3 and out, resulting in the defense on the field 3/4 of the game.

More negatives:

1) Penalties, penalties, and more penalties.

2) Running gadget plays at the goal line. Just run it in for crissakes. You put together this good running team, got big receivers and you're resorting to gadget plays on the goal line? C'mon. Jets lucky to score on shovel pass. Replay showed it came very close to being batted or intercepted.

3) Wildcat. Never liked it, even with Brad Smith running it. It's a momentum killer.
