ESPN's Gruden: 'Green Bay is still searching for its identity on defense'

ESPN "Monday Night Football" analyst Jon Gruden, who will call the Packers at Seattle Seahawks game in week three, was asked Wednesday if he thought there was some cause for concern about the Packers in the wake of Green Bay’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

"I think there’s definitely some concern," Gruden said on "Mike & Mike" show on ESPN Radio. "You can’t just be a great team on one side of the ball if you are going to go to the Super Bowl and win it. You have to be able to eliminate the big plays, the long yardage chunks they are giving up on defense. They gave up a NFL record amount of passing yards last year, and they are not off to a great start.

"They blew some coverages," Gruden said. "I saw Randy Moss wide open. That doesn’t happen in the red zone. You don’t turn Randy Moss loose in a big game. So I think there is some concern. They have got to tighten that up and I know Dom Capers, the defensive coordinator, well enough to think that will happen. But it better happen pretty quick."

Gruden was asked if he thought the problem on defense was with the Packers’ scheme or their personnel.

"I know the scheme works," Gruden said. "I saw them win the Super Bowl with the scheme. It’s a proven scheme. There are a lot of teams that run this scheme. Ray Horton is running it out in Arizona. Dom Capers is still running it. Jim Haslett (Washington Redskins) just went to New Orleans and got after the Saints with this scheme. The players, I think, in a lot of areas – they have got to tackle better. A lot of yardage has accumulated just because of missed tackles. Blown assignments. They have moved Charles Woodson to safety. They have got some unknowns at the corner. I saw (Jarrett) Bush playing corner. They went after him a little bit. They have got to get some other pass rush other than from Clay Matthews. Is it going to be Nick Perry from Southern Cal? Is it going to be Jerel Worthy, the rookie from Michigan State? Who else is going to rush the passer? You can’t just blitz to get there all the time. So I think Green Bay is still searching for its identity on defense."
