He's become a homer Empty He's become a homer

I used to like Birkett but he has become such an unmitigated homer he is losing credibility with me.

Unless some great trade is in the works or some draft pick either drops like mad or comes out of nowhere to be an impact player, there is no way in the world anyone with any sense of understanding of personnel can call the Lions a "winner" this offseason. Mayhew did a good job with the horrible cap situation he put himself in to tread water to the point that he could do something next offseason.

He's got some solid, young talent under contract with managable cap situations that can be used as tradeable commodities if needed, some talented players that either didn't play due to injury or were limited for health reasons and his core group is getting locked up in a way they can be kept under expected future cap numbers. That's where it endsd.

This team is still severly flawed when looking to make that next step and Mayhew has done nothing to fix that so far. He still might be able to pull off that trade or find that gem in the draft that can step in immediately and make an impact. Still, Birkett is reaching with long, homer arms when he claims the Lions are anything but fighting to stay put so far this offseason.
