Underdogs Again Empty Underdogs Again

Post by guppy Sun Jun 09, 2013 11:31 am

Underdogs to Vancouver in the Finals 2 years ago. Underdogs to Pittsburgh this year. Now underdogs once more. In a SportsNation poll only the New England states and Michigan picked the Bruins to win the Cup. The entire rest of the country predicts Chicago. No faith in Boston to be found outside of NE, cept for Michigan. Well, OK. I'd say the Bear has officially been poked.

In one of his earlier posts lampooning Tom Brady, George talked about one of the players should have given Brady a "reach around" on the play. Well, speaking of "reach arounds", here is the "reach around" of the NHL playoffs from Zdeno Chara, # 33 for Boston. His "reach around" prevented the Penguins from tying the game in game 4. Just an awesome play. Definitely worth another look:

Wow. A Boston sports fan doing the "no respect" thing. I guess the sky really is blue.

You got that right. We don't get the respect we deserve. The whole country is picking the Hawks. Must be cause they're pretty damn good I guess. The Boston Bruins train -- The Little Engine That Could -- will just keep chugging along.

George, I take this as more disrespect. Here is a Bobby Orr pinball machine with The Greatest Player Ever in a Blackhawks uniform!! Ugh. What the hell? Bobby played a grand total of 26 games for the Blackhawks at the end of a brilliant (and way too short) Bruins career. His Chicago stint should be erased from memory, not celebrated like this. To make matters worse, the Chicago company that made this machine has Bobby shooting right. Everyone in Boston knows Number 4 shot left. The City of Chicago needs to apologize for this outrage they have commited on the City of Boston, and on the hockey gods. Do you think we would ever be so cheesy as to put Michael Jordan in a Celtics uniform? What's next? Are you going to retire Brian Scalabrini's number as a Bull?

So in 7 of the 13 states where people actually know what hockey is the Bruins are favored.
Still not seeing the disrespect.

Any newbie assistant coach barely wet behind the ears can use this map as a prop for a "its us against the world" motivating speech.

Name the 13 states where people actually know hockey.

In all seriousness, I'd look at the average state temperatures and choose the lowest 13. Betcha, it's damn close to the actual 13.

Az, Fla, Nevada, et al...aren't hotbeds of hockey, as is the northeast isn't beach volleyball country.

He'd have to erase the 56-44% part though. Can't have your players think a lot of people believe in them.

The Northeast down to New Jersey and most of the Great Lakes states I guess.
I don't know, I made it up.
confused

My favorite use of the no respect thing was Rodney Harrison saying after either the Panthers or the Eagles SB that "Nobody outside this lockerroom gave us a chance."

Da hell Rodney?

I actually thought of this very same thing even before you mentioned it. Rodney was the master of creating disrespect.

Even if your team is not in it and you are a hockey fan, you can appreciate this series.  An incredible contest between two great, evenly matched, championship caliber teams.  Both are worthy, but only one can win The Cup.  Its shaping up to be an epic series that is going to go either 6 or 7 games, with the winning team (could be either one) making some incredible play to win it by one goal.   As exciting sporting spectacles go, this is the tops.

Check out the reaction of the Chicago fans to Dan Paille's winning OT goal.   Love it.
