I couldn't resist chiming in on this.

So lets see. Yankee fans boo Robbie Cano on his return to Yankee Stadium in each one of his five at-bats, and serenade him with chants of "Sell Out.  Sell Out"?

They booed him because he took more money to go elsewhere.....and not just a little bit more, $65 MILLION MORE than the Yankees offered.

If Cano is a "sell out" for taking A LOT more money to go to a different team, what does that make basically the rest of the Yankee roster?

But I do understand Yankee fans' thinking, so I'm going to cut them some slack.  They've never been in this position before.  They are always the ones outbidding teams and taking players away from them.  This time they were the ones who were outbid for the free agent.  And it hurts cause it involved NY's best player of the last 5 or more years.  Ouch.  So now they want to be like everyone else.  They want to boo a returning player who chose the money over the uniform.  I get it.  Now they get a taste of what its like for the rest of the world outside of the Evil Empire, and they want to show their hurt too.  I feel your pain my brothers.  LOL.

Oh, and Yankee fans you do know that Boston at least gave Jacoby Ellsbury a little video tribute on his return to Boston, even as a Yankee, right?  Nothing similar for a Nine Year Pinstriper like Robbie from the Yankees organization?  Maybe the organization will show some class and put something together on the big screen before the Mariners leave town.  Ya think?

All very entertaining to say the least.  Especially after the John Harper article in the Daily News.

Oh Boston fans do that worse than anybody. I saw a video of Drew Bledsoe at Gillette when he went in the Pats Hall of Fame. The whole place booed. Disgusting. They did the same thing at Fenway at Kevin Youklis' first game back. The one I can't figure out is Teddy Bruschi. The boos are deafening anytime he sets foot on the field there. What did he ever do wrong?

They are not saying "Booooooo" to Bledsoe.   They are saying "Droooooooo", as in Drew, his name.  Its being said in tribute.

As to Youkilis, like Damon, like Clemens, like Boggs, he came back as a Yankee.  Nuff said.  You wouldn't understand.

The original point being about Yankee fans, is that they are the one fanbase in all of sports that has zero moral standing to complain about one of their own taking more money to go elsewhere.  Its different for them.  Their team pretty much always outbids any other team and takes their star free agent away from them.  That's what the New York Yankees do, and do more than anyone because they have more financial power than anyone.  Just look up and down their roster, and their history.  So it is just funny to see ---- for a change ----- Yankee fans booing a former Yankee for leaving that organization to go get more money from another team.  Or didn't you get that?

The obvious incredible irony of what Yankee fans did was not lost on the rest of the country outside of New York, and not lost on even the NY media.  Apparently its lost on you though.  Due to the absence of any comment by you tending to show even the slightest agreement with us (the rest of the country outside of NY), you predictably attempt to turn it into some kind of anti-Boston thing.  Fail.

You're misguided re Bruschi too.  The fans are not saying "booo", they're saying "Bruuuuuuuu".  Its his name.  Its being said in tribute.

Same thing with Tuukka Rask when he makes a save for the Bruins, they are saying "Tuuuuuuuukka".  In tribute.  Not "booooooo".

They used to say it for Youkilis, "Yoooooooook".  There are still bumper stickers on cars around town with one word in Red Sox lettering:  "Yooooook".

Everyone knows, or should know, the difference between "Boooooo" on the one hand,

and

"Yooooook" or "Bruuuuuuuu" or "Drooooooo" or "Tuuuuuuuuuka" on the other.

This non-Yankee will chime in by saying he heard on a national sports all-night show, (NBCSports.com) that NYers take it bad when one of their own leave.  I am sure if these working guys got a raise, they'd leave too.
Hey Gup, did you forget when Johnny Damon returned to that old Fenway pile, he got booed wearing a Yankee uni?  Wondering if Ruth got booed there? Nah, he was sold to invest in a Broadway show.  86 years of karma resulted.

Jesus. Do you have any sense of humor whatsoever? IT WAS A JOKE!
If you want to be serious, it's pretty ignorant that AV still gets booed in Foxboro 8 years later. It's not his fault the guy BB replaced him with sucks.
Oh and speaking of "Fail", Kevin Youkilis never played at Fenway as a Yankee. The fans yelled "Yooooook" when he came back with the White Sox.
Smart guy.

Now that Youkilis is TB's brother-in-law, I hope he's not booed at the Thanksgiving table?

At least Giselle is busy carving the turkey.  (Tom)  wow...."Double, double entendre"! Very Happy

The problem is, I can never tell with you.

I wish you would joke more often, actually.

Once you establish somewhat of a track record or pattern where your jokes are recognizable, I'm sure I will be able to tell the difference.

For the most part, I think you are constantly in "attack mode".  I base that on history and experience.

Perhaps I should re-evaluate, which I'm perfectly willing to do.

OK then, so back to original reason for starting this thread.

Do you or do you not have an opinion on Yankee fans booing Cano?

Because you know, that's what the original subject matter was.  Why was I not surprised when the subject of Yankee fans treatment of Cano was introduced, and then you chimed in on it, but said zero about Yankee fans and Cano, and proceeded to make your comments about Boston fans?

Oh that's right.  IT WAS A JOKE [hitting myself on the head].  I'm just not as perceptive as I should be.  I'll do better in the future.

BTW, I don't think there is any dispute whatsoever among the participants in this forum that EVERY fanbase has their share of idiots, and the actions of a few idiots are not reflective of the rest of the good fans.

This goes without saying.  But I wanted to say it anyway.  There are idiots everywhere, and of course that includes Foxboro and Fenway.

They're not awfully bright, but they pay their money, they can boo whoever they want.

On a very marginally related note, do you think the Bruins fans, and I know they're a very small minority Gup, who've gone all 1960s Alabama on twitter about PK Subban are aware of what his brother does for a living?

George, I cannot answer the question as posed, simply because I do not consider those anonymous cowards hiding behind social media to be "Bruins fans".

And neither do the Bruins, obviously.  "Real" Bruins fans know that Subban's brother is in their minor league system.  I have long known that as well.  "Real" Bruins fans also know that Jerome Iginla is black.  BTW, Subban is a beast of a player.  That dude has mad skills.

First NHL team to recognize?  Bruins.  1958.  Player:  Willie O'Ree.   [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

First NBA team to have an African-American Head Coach?  Celtics.  Bill Russell.  1966.

First NBA team to have an all black starting five?  Red Auerbach's Celtics.  1963.   Willie Naulls, Satch, Russ and the Jones boys, K.C. and Sam.  Red said he never even realized it.  "I just wanted to win.  So I put out the five best players I had and who gave me the best chance to win."

I do think Cam Neely made a mistake by issuing a statement in response to the Twitter idiots.  That only brought attention to it.  I'm sure he knew that, but on balance he must have decided that he knew he would bring attention to it, but that it just could not be ignored.  So he made a judgment that he could not be silent.  Thus, the attention granted to some clowns who are unidentified to all of us, and unfortunately, will remain so.

Twitter sucks.  There was nothing like that coming from any of the real fans in the seats at the Garden, and every player and coach who was asked said so and confirmed it.  They heard nothing like that in the building.  Zero.  As Brad Marchand said, "Its all Twitter."

..................
Also, now being one day removed from my failure to recognize your joke about "booo" vs. "Bruuuuu", etc., I realize I overreacted and reacted emotionally, not thoughtfully.  The slip-up was mine.  Apologies for the unnecessary tension caused.

To return to the title of this thread, what did Cano give the Yankees, 8-9 years?

Should not have been booed.

As someone once said, "if it's hard to get to the majors, it's harder to stay there."
Let them make what they can.

On closing this post.... poor Chris Paul.
Signed  with Sterling for $130mm.  He knew Sterling's character, now he protests?  Chris Russo was mostly right when he called some events "hypocritical".
He was wrong in telling how others should feel however.
